5 First Steps to Take on Your Road to an xAPI Proof of Concept

Lately, many of our conversations around xAPI have started with one of two questions “I know xAPI could have great benefits for our organization but where do we start?” or “We know we want more learning analytics, but we’re not there yet, what can we do to get ready?”

To help answer these two questions, last week we held The Roadmap to xAPI webinar.  Yet team member Margaret Roth explored five practical steps for how business leaders can start designing their own roadmap to bring xAPI and learning analytics to their organization.

These steps were distilled from the experience of working with many different clients in many different industries who all came to the same big L&D challenge — how can I see the impact of learning investment, evaluate the effectiveness of learning resources, and understand the learning profiles and experience graph of my team? With the lessons learned from several years of implementation experience, she shared best practices, keys to success, and some potential pitfalls to avoid when developing and executing your xAPI Proof of Concept project.

So, where do you start? Here are the five steps not to miss as you design your xAPI Proof of Concept:

  1. Decide to Try xAPI

    • Determine what formal (LMS, traditional classes) and informal (microlearning, communication tools, on-the-job) learning and training you want to capture, track, and analyze.
    • Determine what level of granular formative experience data in addition to traditional summative assessment data that you’d like to capture, track, and analyze.
    • Decide what real-time insight into learning activity, resource use and engagement would be most beneficial to your organization.
  2. Define your xAPI Proof of Concept

    • What is the business challenge, need or goal that you hope to address with better L&D data?
    • What resources do you have for this project? What data are you already collecting?
    • Which learning record store should you use? Does your team also need a business intelligence tool?
    • How will your organization define and measure success for this project?
  3. Run your Proof of Concept

    • Connect your data sources by:

      • Plug and play xAPI-enabled activity providers.
      • Upload or process CSV data into your LRS.
      • Work with an xAPI partner to develop data integrations specific to your learning ecosystem.
  4. Analyze and Explore your Learning Data

    • Use built-in interactive analysis tools in your Learning Record Store.
    • Export graphs from the LRS.
    • Export your data into another analysis tool.
  5. Evaluate your Proof of Concept

    • Did this project achieve the goals and metrics established?
    • Did the proof of concept provide valuable data access and insights?
    • Did you discover anything unexpected in your learning data?
    • How can you scale up this project into a full implementation?
