Federate xAPI: Bring HLA Simulation Data into the xAPI Ecosystem
Federate xAPI is an Apache 2.0 open source HLA federate that transforms simulation activity into Experience API (xAPI) data without requiring changes to your existing simulation federates.
Simply add Federate xAPI to your Runtime Infrastructure (RTI), configure the events you want to capture, and begin emitting standards-based xAPI data for analysis, reporting, and interoperability.
Why Federate xAPI?
Most HLA federations generate enormous amounts of valuable activity data, but that data often remains locked inside simulation environments.
Federate xAPI makes it possible to:
Instrument existing HLA federations with minimal integration effort
Capture xAPI from HLA object state changes
Filter which events become xAPI statements
Send simulation data directly to a Learning Record Store (LRS)
Align simulation data with IEEE Total Learning Architecture (TLA) components, including competency management frameworks, enterprise learner records, and adaptive instructional systems through xAPI interoperability
Make RTI FOM objects available directly for querying in SQL cache
And, if using Apache 2.0 SQL LRS:
have the ability to query simulation data via SQL in real-time
directly integrate with Power BI, Tableau, Apache Superset, Splunk, and other analytics platforms

Example Applications
Collective Training Exercises
Capture events across multinational HLA federations as xAPI to enable consistent after-action analysis, compare exercise performance over time, and integrate simulation data with enterprise learning systems. This supports broader interoperability and data-sharing objectives across training environments, including feeding data back to an LMS from a simulator.
Multi-domain Training
Instrument distributed HLA simulations supporting multi-domain exercises. Convert key object state changes into xAPI statements that can feed real-time dashboards, operational analytics, and long-term readiness metrics without making any changes to your existing federates.
Synthetic Training for Autonomous Systems
Record interactions involving unmanned aircraft, autonomous ground vehicles, or maritime systems during HLA exercises. Transform selected simulation events into xAPI for downstream analysis, AI model evaluation, and cross-exercise performance comparisons as organizations expand autonomous systems training.
New Simulation Development and Acquisition
Because Federate xAPI makes RTI FOM objects available for direct query in the SQL cache, the data available in the FOM is transparent. In this way, developers, stakeholders, and acquisition officials can see for themselves what data is actually available in a simulation and what the quality of that data is.
