The Next 100 Releases: Building the Future of Open xAPI Infrastructure Together

Over the last five years, SQL LRS has grown from an open source project into a meaningful piece of infrastructure for organizations working with xAPI.

On 08 August, 2026, we celebrated our 100th release. And with more than 100,000 Docker pulls, SQL LRS has found its way into learning, training, simulation, and enterprise data environments across government, defense, education, and industry. Organizations are using it to collect xAPI data, connect learning activity to enterprise analytics, support simulation environments, and build interoperable architectures that extend well beyond the boundaries of a traditional learning platform.

That growth changes the nature of the project. Software that becomes part of an organization's infrastructure has to keep moving. Security needs to be maintained, dependencies updated, documentation improved, and bugs fixed. As implementations grow more sophisticated, testing becomes more demanding and developers need better examples, tools, and guidance to move confidently from experimentation into production.

The open source ecosystem around SQL LRS has also expanded. Projects such as Federate xAPI are connecting High Level Architecture simulations with xAPI. LRSPipe provides a way to govern and route xAPI data across learning ecosystems. xAPI Profile tooling supports the semantic consistency that makes data more useful across systems and organizations. Not to mention open source integrations for Moodle and Unity, and new experimental projects like xAPI Prepositions. Taken together, these technologies represent something larger than a collection of individual software projects. They are becoming part of an open technical foundation for learning, training, simulation, and activity data.

We created the SQL LRS Open Source Partner Program to help sustain that foundation and give organizations that depend on it a more direct role in its future.

The Work Behind Open Source

One of the reasons SQL LRS has been widely adopted is straightforward: it is open. Distributed under the Apache 2.0 license, it can be downloaded, deployed, modified, integrated into commercial products, and adapted to the specific requirements of an organization. That freedom has allowed teams to experiment quickly and to build xAPI infrastructure without being locked into a proprietary platform.

Open source software still requires sustained engineering. Releases need to be managed, vulnerabilities addressed, code reviewed, tests maintained, documentation written, and community questions answered. As more organizations use a project in production, the importance of that work only increases.

The Partner Program gives organizations that benefit from SQL LRS a practical way to contribute to its continued development. Annual partner support helps fund maintenance, security, testing, documentation, and the broader collection of open source projects that Yet Analytics maintains around xAPI and interoperable learning data. In return, participating organizations develop a closer relationship with the team doing that work and with the wider community growing around it.

This creates a healthier model for everyone involved. Organizations can continue to take advantage of genuinely open infrastructure, while the engineering work required to maintain that infrastructure has a stronger base of support.

Building an Ecosystem Around Interoperability

The long-term value of xAPI has always been connected to interoperability. Learning and training data increasingly needs to move across systems, organizations, and technical environments. A simulation may need to send activity data into an analytics platform. Training activity may need to connect with operational systems. An enterprise may need to combine data from an LMS, applications, simulators, devices, and other sources to understand how people are actually interacting with its systems.

That challenge is becoming more important as organizations invest in artificial intelligence and increasingly sophisticated analytics. These technologies depend on useful data, and useful data depends on structure, context, and shared meaning. Standards such as xAPI and the technical infrastructure surrounding them provide a way to describe activity consistently enough that information generated in one environment can remain meaningful somewhere else.

No single company can create that ecosystem by itself. It develops through the combined work of software companies, systems integrators, consultants, government programs, universities, researchers, developers, and customers that share an interest in making data more portable and useful.

The Partner Program is intended to create a stronger connection among those organizations. Depending on the level of participation, partners can take part in ecosystem briefings, roadmap discussions with Yet Analytics engineers, community conversations, and collaborative marketing or educational efforts such as webinars and case studies. Those interactions give organizations a better view into where the technology is heading and give us valuable perspective on how it is being used in the field. They also provide partners with an engaged audience seeking to learn more about their products, services, and experience with xAPI.

Creating Value Around Open Technology

There is a practical business reason for organizations to participate. As xAPI expands into simulation, enterprise analytics, AI-enabled systems, and larger architectures throughout government, defense, healthcare, aviation, and corporate L&D, customers increasingly need partners who understand how these technologies fit together.

For a consultancy, systems integrator, or software company, demonstrated experience within the xAPI ecosystem can be meaningful. Customers want to know whether a potential partner understands the standard, the available infrastructure, and the challenges involved in moving from an xAPI proof of concept to an operational system.

Participation in the Partner Program provides a visible way to demonstrate that involvement. Partner recognition, directory placement, collaborative content, roadmap conversations, and the ability to use official partner branding can help organizations communicate their experience to customers and collaborators. For companies already building xAPI-enabled products or delivering implementation services, the program can also create new relationships within the ecosystem.

The commercial opportunity here follows naturally from the technical one. As more organizations adopt interoperable learning data architectures, they will need software, implementation expertise, integration services, analytics, training, and ongoing support. A stronger open source ecosystem expands the number of organizations capable of participating in that market.

Supporting More Than an LRS

Although SQL LRS is at the center of the program, the work extends beyond the LRS itself. Federate xAPI is helping connect simulation environments to xAPI and the Total Learning Architecture. LRSPipe provides tools for managing the movement of xAPI data between systems. Profile tooling helps developers create more consistent semantic models for the activities they describe. And synthetic data generation allows developers and stakeholders with a cost-effective way to test their data design and technical assumptions throughout the development process.

These open source projects address different technical problems, yet they share a common purpose: making interoperable activity data easier to implement in real environments.

That work becomes increasingly important as learning systems connect with the rest of the enterprise. The distinction between "learning data" and other forms of organizational activity data is becoming less useful. Training happens in applications, simulators, operational systems, collaborative tools, and increasingly in environments mediated by AI. The infrastructure required to understand those activities has to work across those boundaries.

Supporting the SQL LRS ecosystem helps ensure that organizations have open tools available as those architectures evolve.

The Next 100 Releases

Now 100 releases into the life of SQL LRS, we have been thinking about what the next 100 should look like.

There is still substantial work ahead. We see opportunities for deeper interoperability, stronger developer tooling, better integration with simulation environments, more sophisticated data pipelines, improved testing and deployment practices, and new approaches to connecting xAPI data with analytics and artificial intelligence.

The most important part of that future, however, may be the community surrounding the technology. The success of open infrastructure depends on organizations choosing to use it, contribute to it, build businesses around it, and help shape where it goes next.
